C130 The Credible Sport SUPER STOL PROGRAM
The "Credible Sport" phase I program was initiated by the OSD directorate and was designed to validate S.T.O.L. approach configuration and associated avionics. Hercules 74-1683 was modified so it could take off and land almost like a helicopter. The aircraft was equipped with lift rockets slanting downward, slowdown rockets facing forward. The aircraft was intended for use in Iran to rescue American hostages. During a STOL demonstration flight the pilot fired the upper set of slowdown rockets at a height of 40 feet, instead of 20 feet at usual. The navigator was trained to fire the lower slowdown rockets three seconds later, just after touchdown.

Super Constellation un avion mythique
Le plus remarquable, le plus fin et sans aucun doute l'un des plus beaux avions de ligne à hélices a été le Lockheed Constellation, qui a servi dans la plupart des grandes compagnies aériennes du monde. Le projet du Constellation date de juin 1939, lorsque Howard Hughes et Jack Frye, les principaux responsables de la compagnie TWA, ont demandé au bureau d'études de Lockheed de développer un grand quadrimoteur de transport commercial destiné à servir sur les lignes transcontinentales américaines. Le prototype de l'appareil, caractérisé par quatre moteurs Wright de 2 200 ch, un fuselage à l'aérodynamique parfaitement étudiée, un empennage tridérive et un train d'atterrissage tricycle à la configuration étonnamment moderne, n'a effectué son premier vol qu'en janvier 1943 en raison de l'entrée en guerre des Etats-Unis. Comme l'aviation militaire américaine faisait alors feu de tout bois, l'appareil fut réquisitionné afin d'assurer des missions de transport de troupes. Dès que les hostilités s'achevèrent, les 15 Constellation en service dans l'US Army Air Force revinrent à des activités beaucoup plus pacifiques. La compagnie Lockheed, voyant déjà beaucoup plus loin, investit alors des sommes très élevées pour produire le Model L1049 Super-Constellation, dont les principales caractéristiques résidaient dans des dimensions supérieures, des réservoirs de carburant supplémentaires installés aux extrémités des ailes et, surtout, des moteurs faisant appel à la technologie nouvelle du compresseur. L'avion pouvait transporter 89 passagers pour la version la plus évoluée. Avec le Super-G-Constellation, qui vola en décembre 1954, la firme Lockheed parvint à réaliser un rêve qu'elle caressait depuis fort longtemps : accomplir pour la première fois des liaisons transatlantiques sans escale de l'ouest vers l'est, où les avions sont favorisés par les vents. Dans une ultime tentative, l'avionneur américain s'employa à accroître la distance franchissable de son quadrimoteur, dont, en 1956, il extrapola le Super Starliner. Mais les premiers jets arrivaient et coupèrent les ailes du plus bel avion de ligne jamais construit. - Un total de 856 appareils ont été construits, depuis la première version, le C-69 jusqu'au L-1649 Starliner. - Aujourd'hui le Super Constellation a pratiquement disparu de l'espace aérien et seuls 3 volent encore dans le monde. - La restauration du "Breitling Super Constellation" est l'oeuvre de bénévoles passionnés d'aviation, regroupés au sein de la "Super Constellation Flyers Association". - En soutenant ce projet, Breitling entend participer à la préservation d'une véritable légende de l'aviation, considérée comme le plus bel avion à hélice jamais construit... Je vous laisse donc juste l'admirer en vol au Bourget ce 21 juin 2009, et rêver avec moi...
